This vibrant, clown-like acrobat in a handstand poster is an original vintage advertising poster created circa 1980 by highly collected fashion industry illustrator René Gruau, to promote a new rayon fabric created by J P Bemberg.

J P Bemberg was a German textile company that originally developed and patented the manufacturing process for this fine artificial fiber which they named Bemberg. Today, this registered trademark is owned by the Japanese company Asahi Kasei.

René Gruau was commissioned by the company’s Italian division to design this poster for the purpose of promoting this cutting edge silk replacement fabric to the elite fashion market in Italy. His whimsical and dramatically colourful gestural paint strokes convey the lightness and flexibility of the fabric - so airy and silky even an acrobat can do a handstand costumed in it!
